My family migrated from Terra Haute, Indiana to Los Angeles California in the 1970s. My mother started teaching in high schools in Compton, CA, Washington D.C., and Pasadena, CA. As a Mighty Mustang of John Muir High School in Pasadena, California, I am still an active member of the Alumni.
At 16 years old, I attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. As an undergraduate, I became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. After graduation, I worked for a Child Development Center before I went to Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey.
At the age of 25, I started teaching English at Christian Community College and Compton College. Additionally, I started my Ph.D. program at Claremont Graduate University. It was this journey that I became a teacher-scholar-practitioner. Much of my scholarship as a qualitative researcher, as I am a historian who wants to explain the world around us through uncovering the tapestry of stories that demonstrates our shared humanity.
I am currently working on a few book projects about the Trinity of Albums (Lemonade, 4:44, Everything is Love); the Significance of Booker T. Washington School in Terra Haute, Indiana; and the life of William Sweatt, an athlete within the segregated mid-west of Terra Haute, Indiana.
I am an active member of the following:
